William Murl McMurtry was born on May 4, 1934 in Enid, Oklahoma. McMurtry served in the U.S. Army, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Oklahoma State University, and a Ph.D. from what is now the University of North Texas. At North Texas, his dissertation committee consisted of Helen Hewitt (chair), Robert W. Ottman, Cecil Adkins, and George Morey.
